Interview with Tenebrae In Perpetuum done on 7-15-19

Interview with Atratus vocals and music done for Tenebrae In Perpetuum done by Patrick

1.Hails Atratus how are things going with this week? Please introduce yourself to the readers?
All right here, thanks. Tenebrae In Perpetuum come from north-east of Italy and is active since 2001, through the release of 4 albums and various minor splits and other releases. I only add that Tenebrae In Perpetuum plays obscure and misanthropic Black Metal exclusively.

2.When did you first discover black metal music and who were the first bands you listened to?Who are some of your current favorite bands that you are listening to?
I discovered Black Metal in 1997 thanks to the reading of some metal magazines. I started by listening to the most mainstream bands like Cradle of Filth (Vempire) and then move on to Emperor (Anthems ...), Immortal (Pure Holocaust), Mayhem (Live in Leipzig), Marduk (Heaven ...), Satyricon (Nemesis Divina) and forward gradually in the deep underground movement. I have rarely listened to new Black Metal bands and records in the last 10 years. In the last few months I have listened to enough Mayhem - Ordo ad Chao, Thorns - Thorns and Gorrch - Nera Estasi.

3.When did you become interested in writing and playing music? What was the first instrument you learned to play? Are you self-taught or did you have lessons when first starting out?
The first instrument I played was been electric guitar and I never took lessons. I wrote my first songs in the fall of 1998, which were published on the first Beatrik demo-tape.

4.Are their any instruments that you would like to learn to play one day?
At the moment I would like to be able to use softwere better to produce the electronic sounds I'm interested. Then I would like to be able to play better guitar and bass, but even so I can do everything I'm interested and what I need at the moment.

5.Who are some of your influences and favorite musicians?
About Black Metal, the Scandinavian classics of the 1990s, of course, but in the last 10 years I have also been influenced by some more or less popular rock and electronic rock bands and artists.

6.You started Tenebrae In Perpetuum back in 2001 when did you get the idea to start this band? How did you choose Tenebrae In Perpetuum as the name of the band does it have a special meaning?
Tenebrae In Perpetuum were born during a period of total and deep Black Metal mysticism in the fall of 2001.
When I thought the name, Tenebrae In Perpetuum seemed appropriate given my neo-Latin roots and the fact that I sing in Italian. I also believe that this name has a strong dark charge that perfectly fits the concept of the band.

7.Anorexia Obscura is the newest release how long did it take to write the music for the new release? How long does it usually take you to complete one song?
The writing and production of the album was quite fast, between October 2018 and April 2019. When I have a period of inspiration, I prefer to concentrate totally on what I do so as to keep everything clear in my mind. The creation time of a song depends on various things, on its complexity and if I like it right away or if it needs other variations. Sometimes it lasts for several months.

8.What are some subjects you wrote about on the new release?Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?
Lyrics and vocals are always the last thing I write and register.
Anorexia Obscura talks about diseases of the mind and nervous system, experiments and self-induced torture through cold and sharp steel and silicon devices, oscillations that act on the mind and induce hypnosis, a tormented girl / angel / demon who watches over me and more. All in a very dark and sick atmosphere.

9.How do you feel the bands musicial style has changed over the years?Who would you say are Tenebrae In Perpetuum biggest influences?
At the beginning Tenebrae In Perpetuum were inspired by bands such as Darkthrone, Warloghe, Katharsis, the demos of Emperor, Carpathian Forest, Graveland and Veles and however by all the darkest works of Scandinavian and European Black Metal. At the beginning the music was simpler and more minimal but then the complexity of riffs and structures grew, to the point of inserting some little old school analog electronic element on this new album.

10..Besides the upcoming Anorexia Obscura release are the bands previous releases still available to purchase?Besides physical releases does the band have any other merchandise currently available if yes what is available and where can the readers buy it?
I still have some old releases available. Recently we also reprinted something of our old stuff, the demo and the 7 "on LP and the first album on LP and tape (Ordo MCM, 2017). Other releases instead are completely sold-out, especially those on vinyl.

11.Besides working in Tenebrae In Perpetuum do you currently work with any other bands or solo projects if yes please tell the readers a little about them?
Currently my Beatrik project has been stopped since 2005 and I think it will never be picked up again. From 2016 I started writing some new experimental material, not metal but quite doom, which maybe one day will be published even if I don't know what the project will be called yet. I should get to work on it soon and it's very strange stuff, however. I don't even know what kind of music it can be.

12.Atratus you live in Italy what is your opinion of Italy's black metal scene over the years?
Unfortunately I have not been following any Black Metal scene for at least 10 years. In Italy, as in every other country, there are certainly some valid bands and many useless. In the early 2000s I believe several good bands have emerged including Forgotten Tomb, Aborym (already active for several years), Altar Of Perversion, etc and maybe Tenebrae In Perpetuum and Beatrik also. It must be said that perhaps we Italians do not enjoy great international credibility and this makes it a bit more difficult to emerge as a band. I believe there are many Italian bands underrated because of this.

13.Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of Italy and are their any new bands you feel the readers should check out soon?
About the old and historical bands surely early Necrodeath, Bulldozer, Altar Of Perversion, first Aborym while about the new bands I know very little but I could quote Gorrch.

14.What does black metal mean to you and how do you feel it has changed over the years?
For me, Black Metal is love for darkness, contemplation, solitude, isolation, mysticism. All this should always be valid, since Black Metal was born and until now. Black Metal must be violent music that inspires fear and restlessness but too often I hear bands that make melodic music to the limits of ridicule. I believe that Black Metal is a musical genre that can evolve in many different and interesting ways even if the real Black Metal must remain in very precise rules.

15.Thank you Atratus for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?
Thanks to you for the support, I have nothing else to add. Regards!
