Interview with Cultus Profano posted on 9-26-20

1.When did you two first meet and was it long before you started Cultus Profano?Who would you say are the bands biggest influences? How did you choose Cultus Profano as the name of the band and does it have a special meaning?

A: We met shortly before forming the band. We both have different influences, but some of our common ones include Armagedda, Supplicium and Stuthoff, to name a few. Cultus Profano is a loose Latin translation of a profane cult. This name perfectly translates the blasphemy and darkness that we convey in our music.

2.I believe Cultus Profano is a two person band when you started this band did you plan to work as a two piece band or would you like to find new musicians to form a complete line-up?

S: Yes, Cultus Profano is a duo and will always remain this way. In no way is it a handicap or an incomplete lineup. In fact it is a huge advantage. We both get to fully realize our vision without worrying about other input or ideas.

3.Accursed Possession is the bands second full-length releas how long did it take you two write the music for the new release?Do you both take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything?

A: We began writing the songs for AP in 2017 and entered the studio in 2019. Both Strzyga and myself play a major role in the writing process. Since we both play guitar and drums, we have the ability to alternate instruments during song writing. Throughout each song it is a combination of our riffs and drum patterns. All final versions are a complete collaboration between the two of us.

4.Who usually handles writing the lyrics for the music and what are some subjects written about on the new release?Which usually comes first the lyrics or the music?

S: As mentioned, it is a complete collaborative effort and this applies to the lyrics as well. The two of us both write lyrics for Cultus Profano. Our music always comes before the lyrics because to us, the music is the most important part of the band.

5.Besides the new release Accursed Possession are their any copies of the debut release still availible?Besides physical releases does the band have any other merchandise currently availible if yes what is availible and where can the readers purchase it?

A: There are digipak CD versions of our first album, Sacramentum Obscurus, still available. As for Accursed Possesion, besides the vinyl, cassette and digipak formats, we also have shirts, metal pins and patches available. If interested, we can be contacted through Facebook messanger or emailed at cultus.profano@gmail.com.

6.What does Black Metal mean to you two?

S: Black metal to me, is an expression of hatred and darkness. It is a deep connection with an evil presence that awakens obscurity from within.

A: Black metal is a dark brooding energy. It is something that truly expresses evil, blasphemy, and darkness.

7.Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of California? Are their any new bands that you feel the readers should check out soon?

S: Of course Slayer’s and Metallica’s first few albums were fucking great. As far as new bands, I would say Nexion and Whoredom Rife have been some of our favorites. Very dark and evil music.

8..Besides bands are their any honest, reliable labels or distro's you could recomend to the readers?

A: It might sound biased, but Debemur Morti Productions is one of the most reliable labels out right now. They have an incredible roster of great bands such as Archgoat, Blut Aus Nord, Behexen, Akhlys, Inferno, Crimson Moon, and many more that keep the black flame burning. Terratur Possessions is also another other great label.

9.Strzyga you handle the vocals for the band when did you start screaming and growling?Do you do anything special to keep your throat and voice healthy?

S: Both Advorsus and I handle vocals equally in the band. I do not do anything special for my voice.

10.Who are some of your favorite vocalists?

A: Graav of Armagedda, Urgarr-oth of Supplicium, Hat and Pest of Gorgoroth are a few.

S: Satyr in early Satyricon and Graav (on Armegedda’s “The Final War Approaching“) are some of my favorite vocalists.

11.Strzyga you also handle the guitars for the band when did you first become interested in playing the guitars? Are you self-taught or did you take lessons when first starting out?

S: I have played guitar for many years now. Drums were my main instrument until Cultus Profano. At that point I made the full switch to guitar. I am self taught.

12. Advorsus you take care of the drums for the band when did you first become interested in the drums? Are you self-taught or did you take lessons when first starting out?

A: I started drumming when I was around 11 years of age. At first I took a few basic lessons and eventually really learned the instrument by studying and emulating the bests such as Dave Lombardo, Pete Sandoval, Frost, Igor Cavalera, Hellhammer, etc.

13.Besides the guitars and drums are their any instruments that either of you would like to learn one day?

S: I would say that I am very satisfied with playing only drums, guitar and bass. A: I agree with Strzyga, guitar, bass, and drums are sufficient.

14.Other then working in Cultus Profano do either of you work with any other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?

S: I do not. Cultus Profano is my only project.

A: Besides Cultus Profano, I also play drums in the death metal band, Sadistic Intent. For nearly a decade, I have been desecrating the stages thoughout the world with them. I also have a few projects that are being developed now. More on that soon...

15.Thank you Strzyga and Advorsus for taking the time to fill this interview out do either of you have any final comments for the readers?

A: Cheers for having us. Accurssed Possession is out now and we eagerly await this pandemic to pass so that we can continue to spread our darkness. We have European, South and Central American, Mexican, and US tours lined up. The black flame will continue to burn...
