Interview with Death Hound (all instruments for Unkept) done on 8-24-21

1.Hails DH! Please introduce yourself to the readers?

DH: Hails Patrick and thanks for the interview. I am Death Hound from Unkept.

2.When did you first discover black and death metal music and who were the first bands that you heard? Who are some of the current bands that you have been listening too?

DH: Earlier bands like older Slayer, Razor, Venom, Celtic Frost and Sacrifice would be the first more extreme metal bands for the time that I was exposed to in my youth and later some of the 2nd wave of black metal with bands like Marduk, Emperor, Mayhem and Satyricon would really make an impression on me. For the record, I also like some of the older death metal bands that would emerge from Sweden, England and the USA like Carnage, Dismember, Entombed, Carcass and Massacre which I really like as well. Some of the current bands I listen to on the more blackened death or black metal side of things are Invocation, Ceremonial Bloodbath, Cthonica, Goatblood, Heresiacrch, Profane Order, Blood Chalice, and Tyrant Goatgaldrakona to name a few.

3.When did you first become interested in writing and playing music? What was the first instrument you first learned to play?

DH: In my teens I began trying to learn how to play on my own on electric guitar at first but I really did not start to write anything until years later.

4.What instruments do you currently play? Are their any new instruments that you would like to learn to play one day?

DH: I play guitar, bass and drums. For new instruments…perhaps better my skills with acoustic guitar and I wouldn’t mind trying to learn piano.

5.DH.you started Unkept earlier this year when did you first get the idea to start this band? Are you satisfied with how things have gone so far?

DH: Correct, I have had the idea for awhile but I think this whole “worldly crisis” pandemic madness pushed it into overdrive. With having more time to spare and all the various controversial matters going on world wide and simply being tired of hearing the ongoing monotony of it all, it became a true inspiration to do so.

6.You are the sole-member of Unkept, did you plan to work alone or would you like to add more members to make it a full line-up?

DH: It was really more convenient to work alone with all that’s been happening in present times. For now, it will remain as just myself, I think.

7.For the readers unfamiliar with Unkept's musical style how would you best describe it? Who would you say are the bands biggest influences?

DH: For the most part I would say a black death metal style with influences of war metal and older forms of death metal too. Picture Marduk meets a heavy death metal band like Carnage as an example.

8.What do you feel is the easiest and hardest part about being the only member of the band?

DH: Independence and not having to rely on anyone is the easiest part but financially with paying for either recording costs or getting artwork or that done on your own is a bit harder then having a full member band splitting the costs.

9.The Self-titled debut is being released through Dawning Septic Prod. When did you first come in contact with this label?

DH: After having a previous release deal fall through with another label, I had found Dawning Septic Productions online and decided to make contact around May 2021 and they agreed to do a tape edition.

10.How long did it take you to write the music for the debut release? How long does it usually take to complete one song?

DH: To write the debut EP, it was written within a few weeks or so and then after was sent for mixing and mastering. I am not certain on that but it could range from a day or a few days at a time to write one song out.

11.Where do you draw inspiration for the lyrics and what are some subjects written about on the debut release?

DH: Warfare, destruction and historic incursions for the most part is of topic matter.

12.Have you started working on new music for the next release? Will it be a EP. or would you like to write enough for a full-length release?

DH: Not as of yet but I will when I have more time and inspiration for it. Hopefully, next time round it will be more towards a full-length release but it all depends how I feel. I would rather do something more worth while and worth doing than just shit something out for the sake of having a new release as fast as possible.

13.What does Underground Metal mean to you?

DH: Metal of the more extreme and ghastly variety that is not liked by a majority first off and is not on every single billboard sign or medium available that is definitely less known or not accessible.

14.Besides working in Unkept do you currently work with any other projects or bands? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?

DH: I do but I am not here to discuss them.

15.When not working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free

time?

DH: I read, write, exercise, research, explore, survive, listen to music and work on self improvement.

16.Unkept comes out of the Canadian Blackened death metal scene, what is your opinion of Canada's metal scene over the years?

DH: Unkept is from Canada yes but I would not say we are part of any scene and being that Unkept only began in Spring 2021, we have barely put a dot on the map yet. The Canadian metal scene I feel is strong and growing, there are a lot of great bands from coast to coast that come from here from both the past and present.

17.Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of Canada and are there any new ones you feel the readers should check out soon?

DH: Some of my all-time favorites would be mainly older bands like Razor, Sacrifice, Infernal Majesty, Blasphemy and Slaughter and newer or more recent bands to check out from Canada would be Ceremonial Bloodbath, Saccage, Hak-Ed Damm, Outre-Tombe, Spectral Dance, Hellacaust, Nuclear Hammer, Profane Order and Paroxsihezm.

18.Thank you DH. for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?

DH: No problem, thanks again Patrick for doing this interview with me! Support bands, labels, Zines and take the time to listen to the Unkept debut release if you haven’t already and download or buy one of our tapes!
