Interview with Total Hate done by Patrick

1.Hails how are things in Germany these days? Please introduce yourself to the readers?
Hails Patrick! I`m Adrastos, founder, songwriter and vocalist of total hate. Honestly I don't care about things in germany and the rest of the world, but we're looking forward to the release date of our 4th album at the moment.

2.When did you first discover black metal music and who were the first bands you listened to?Are their any current bands that have caught your attention?
I discovered black metal in the mid 90s. I started listening to metal when I was 12 or 13 years old. A local punk gave me a mix tape with some german punk bands and some tracks of priest, maiden, slayer and anthrax. These bands blew me away, so I started tape trading and discovered bands like megadeth, metallica, sepultura, sodom and so on until I heard about death metal. This changed my live and at a time where most of the bands turned into crap and tried something „different“, a guy from a local record store recommended bands like marduk, immortal, emperor and impaled nazarene. I knew that this was the metal I was longing for the whole time. This is the most intense metal genre until today and that will never change. The last band that really blew me away is a band from finland called vargrav. It was like finding a forgotten album from the 90s. Ultra Silvam released a death metal highlight, besides the overproduced wanna-be-death metal bullshit. Murg from sweden and Sühnopfer from france released fantastic albums everybody should check. This is the essence of black metal and a fist in the face of the hipster bullshit bands who started hijacking the black metal scene, piss off !!!

3.Total Hate was started in 2000 when did you first get the idea to start this band? What is the current line up of the band?
My first band was or is Seeds of Hate. I founded the band in 1997 and we had many line up changes. In 1999 everybody left the band and finding black metal musicians at this time was nearly impossible, I bought a guitar and started rehearsing, because I was and still am possessed by this music. While we started the recordings of the third Seeds of Hate demo, Akhenaten from Judas Iscariot joined the band and he was of course a way better guitarist than me. I didn't want to stop playing guitar, so I asked our Seeds of Hate drummer Tondhron, if he wants to join a new project and he agreed. This was the birth of Total Hate. We had also some line up changes, but found a strong line up now which consists of Aer (guitar, songwriting), Erebos (lead guitar), Lykos (bass, lyrics & vocals), Serrator (drums) and me (vocals, lyrics and songwriting).

4.How do you feel Total Hate's music has evolved over the years and who would you say are the bands biggest influences?
Total Hate was really primitive, raw stuff in the beginning, when we were just a two piece and recorded everything with our own equipment. Through the years the songwriting got better and when Aer changed from bass to guitar and songwriting, we reached the „next level“. We're still playing old school black metal the way I always wanted to play and how it has to be performed, but with more variable songs and a more powerful sound than 19 years ago. My biggest influences are the 90s albums of Gorgoroth, Darkthrone, Marduk, Throne of Ahaz, Dodheimsgard, Immortal, Gehenna and Emperor.

5.Throne Behind A Black Veil is the bands fourth full-length how long did it take the band to write the music for the new release?Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member write everything?
Hard to say, because we had two song left from the lifecrusher recordings, but changed some riffs. I would say it happened within 6 months. It's Aer and me who write the songs. If a song has been written, Aer adds a drummachine and the others can download and listen to the new songs. Not very old school, but it's way better than sitting hours in a rehearsal room. We are very effectively since Aer joined songwriting and we have already our fifth album written and will hopefully start the recordings in autumn or winter 2019.

6.Who usually handles writing the lyrics for the music and what are some subjects written about on the new release?Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?
I wrote all the lyrics so far, except on the latest album. There are a couple of lyrics written by Lykos for the first time. We are dealing with the same topics since the beginning: Satanism, misanthropy and blasphemy. My lyrics have a very personal content and that's one of the reasons why we don't print the lyrics. I heard of bands that are writing the lyrics first, but we don't do it this way.

7.Besides the upcoming Throne Behind A Black Veil release are the bands previous releases still available for the readers to purchase?Besides physical releases does the band have any other merchandise currently available for the readers to buy if yes what is available and where can the readers buy it?
Yes, we have still some copies of the first three albums on cd and some vinyl copies of the lifecrusher album left, but I guess the vinyls are gone very soon. All patches are sold out and we have also only a small amount of 2 different shirt designs left. If you want to buy stuff, check our homepage and send us a message or check the eisenwald and the eternity records webstores.

8.Does Total Hate play live very often or do you prefer to work in the studio? What have been some of the bands most memorable shows over the years?Who are some bands you have had the opportunity to share the stage with?
We played two shows in 2017, three in 2018 and we will play four shows until the end of the year and have already confirmed two shows in 2020. I prefer playing live instead of being in the studio, but a band shouldn't play too much live shows, because it should be something special. We played with bands like Urgehal, Inquisition, Elite, Blodsrit, Insignium, Necrophobic, Endezzma, Krater, Angantyr and Lugubre, just to name some. We had great times, but I guess the most memorable shows were during the very chaotic tour with Blodsrit, Elite and Insignium, a show in nuremberg where I pushed the wrong button at a fogmachine and the venue drowned in fog, while we were playing and our first show ever in 2005 at the under the black sun festival.

9.Are their any tours or shows planned in support of the new release? If yes where will the band be playing?
The four confirmed shows will be in Halle, at the Barther Metal Open Air, in our hometown Nuremberg and in Erfurt. We have some ideas and plans for a 20 years show next year and maybe a tour, but let's wait until the new album has been unleashed.

10.What does black metal mean to you and how do you feel it has changed over the years?
It's a serious way of life and nothing changed since I discovered black metal in the mid 90s! My interest in getting in touch with other bands, zines and people is nearly lost, but not what I feel when I listen to the old black metal classics or when I prepare myself for a live show, using corpsepaint, spikes, leather, fire, bullets and all the other stuff that means black metal for me.

11.Total Hate comes out of the German black metal scene what is your opinion of the black metal scene in Germany over the years?
I had many contacts back in the 90s/ early 2000s, but most of the contacts and bands left the black metal scene years ago or changed their music. I really don't know, if there's still a scene in germany like we had in the 90s. Maybe with new people, but to be honest, I don't care, because the glory days are long time gone and won't come back.

12.Who are your all-time favorite German black metal bands and are their any new bands you could recommend to the readers?
The old stuff of bands like Ungod, Desaster, Dark Fortress, Mayhemic Truth, Morrigan, Skalder, Eternity, Empaligon, Lunar Aurora, Secrets of the Moon, Kapein, Nyktalgia, Katharsis, Sterbend,
Nagelfar, Graven was really fantastic black metal from our country. As I said, I don't know much about german black metal nowaydays, but I would recommend the albums „Im Bannkreis der Götter“ and „Secreta Obscura Mysterium“ of Lunatic Affliction, excellent 90s influenced melodic black metal. Besides I would recommend the old and upcoming releases of Mosaic, Krater, Horns of Domination, Aether, Ascension & Gráb.

13.Are their any honest and reliable labels and distro's you feel the readers should check out soon?
Yes, support and check out Apocalyptic Art, Eisenwald, Eternity Records and Ván Records.

14.Besides playing in Total Hate do you or any of the members currently play in any other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers about them?
Well, Seeds of Hate is still on hold, but I have a new soloproject since march, but it's too early to tell more about it. It will be slower, but also traditional black metal. Aer has some other bands and projects, but I don't know which of them still exist. Lykos plays bass in Lunatic Affliction and Serrator is also the drummer of Goath, excellent blackened death metal from our hometown !

15.Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?
Thank you for the interview. Nothing more to add, death to peace !

Interview with Tenebrae In Perpetuum done on 7-15-19

Interview with Atratus vocals and music done for Tenebrae In Perpetuum done by Patrick

1.Hails Atratus how are things going with this week? Please introduce yourself to the readers?
All right here, thanks. Tenebrae In Perpetuum come from north-east of Italy and is active since 2001, through the release of 4 albums and various minor splits and other releases. I only add that Tenebrae In Perpetuum plays obscure and misanthropic Black Metal exclusively.

2.When did you first discover black metal music and who were the first bands you listened to?Who are some of your current favorite bands that you are listening to?
I discovered Black Metal in 1997 thanks to the reading of some metal magazines. I started by listening to the most mainstream bands like Cradle of Filth (Vempire) and then move on to Emperor (Anthems ...), Immortal (Pure Holocaust), Mayhem (Live in Leipzig), Marduk (Heaven ...), Satyricon (Nemesis Divina) and forward gradually in the deep underground movement. I have rarely listened to new Black Metal bands and records in the last 10 years. In the last few months I have listened to enough Mayhem - Ordo ad Chao, Thorns - Thorns and Gorrch - Nera Estasi.

3.When did you become interested in writing and playing music? What was the first instrument you learned to play? Are you self-taught or did you have lessons when first starting out?
The first instrument I played was been electric guitar and I never took lessons. I wrote my first songs in the fall of 1998, which were published on the first Beatrik demo-tape.

4.Are their any instruments that you would like to learn to play one day?
At the moment I would like to be able to use softwere better to produce the electronic sounds I'm interested. Then I would like to be able to play better guitar and bass, but even so I can do everything I'm interested and what I need at the moment.

5.Who are some of your influences and favorite musicians?
About Black Metal, the Scandinavian classics of the 1990s, of course, but in the last 10 years I have also been influenced by some more or less popular rock and electronic rock bands and artists.

6.You started Tenebrae In Perpetuum back in 2001 when did you get the idea to start this band? How did you choose Tenebrae In Perpetuum as the name of the band does it have a special meaning?
Tenebrae In Perpetuum were born during a period of total and deep Black Metal mysticism in the fall of 2001.
When I thought the name, Tenebrae In Perpetuum seemed appropriate given my neo-Latin roots and the fact that I sing in Italian. I also believe that this name has a strong dark charge that perfectly fits the concept of the band.

7.Anorexia Obscura is the newest release how long did it take to write the music for the new release? How long does it usually take you to complete one song?
The writing and production of the album was quite fast, between October 2018 and April 2019. When I have a period of inspiration, I prefer to concentrate totally on what I do so as to keep everything clear in my mind. The creation time of a song depends on various things, on its complexity and if I like it right away or if it needs other variations. Sometimes it lasts for several months.

8.What are some subjects you wrote about on the new release?Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?
Lyrics and vocals are always the last thing I write and register.
Anorexia Obscura talks about diseases of the mind and nervous system, experiments and self-induced torture through cold and sharp steel and silicon devices, oscillations that act on the mind and induce hypnosis, a tormented girl / angel / demon who watches over me and more. All in a very dark and sick atmosphere.

9.How do you feel the bands musicial style has changed over the years?Who would you say are Tenebrae In Perpetuum biggest influences?
At the beginning Tenebrae In Perpetuum were inspired by bands such as Darkthrone, Warloghe, Katharsis, the demos of Emperor, Carpathian Forest, Graveland and Veles and however by all the darkest works of Scandinavian and European Black Metal. At the beginning the music was simpler and more minimal but then the complexity of riffs and structures grew, to the point of inserting some little old school analog electronic element on this new album.

10..Besides the upcoming Anorexia Obscura release are the bands previous releases still available to purchase?Besides physical releases does the band have any other merchandise currently available if yes what is available and where can the readers buy it?
I still have some old releases available. Recently we also reprinted something of our old stuff, the demo and the 7 "on LP and the first album on LP and tape (Ordo MCM, 2017). Other releases instead are completely sold-out, especially those on vinyl.

11.Besides working in Tenebrae In Perpetuum do you currently work with any other bands or solo projects if yes please tell the readers a little about them?
Currently my Beatrik project has been stopped since 2005 and I think it will never be picked up again. From 2016 I started writing some new experimental material, not metal but quite doom, which maybe one day will be published even if I don't know what the project will be called yet. I should get to work on it soon and it's very strange stuff, however. I don't even know what kind of music it can be.

12.Atratus you live in Italy what is your opinion of Italy's black metal scene over the years?
Unfortunately I have not been following any Black Metal scene for at least 10 years. In Italy, as in every other country, there are certainly some valid bands and many useless. In the early 2000s I believe several good bands have emerged including Forgotten Tomb, Aborym (already active for several years), Altar Of Perversion, etc and maybe Tenebrae In Perpetuum and Beatrik also. It must be said that perhaps we Italians do not enjoy great international credibility and this makes it a bit more difficult to emerge as a band. I believe there are many Italian bands underrated because of this.

13.Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of Italy and are their any new bands you feel the readers should check out soon?
About the old and historical bands surely early Necrodeath, Bulldozer, Altar Of Perversion, first Aborym while about the new bands I know very little but I could quote Gorrch.

14.What does black metal mean to you and how do you feel it has changed over the years?
For me, Black Metal is love for darkness, contemplation, solitude, isolation, mysticism. All this should always be valid, since Black Metal was born and until now. Black Metal must be violent music that inspires fear and restlessness but too often I hear bands that make melodic music to the limits of ridicule. I believe that Black Metal is a musical genre that can evolve in many different and interesting ways even if the real Black Metal must remain in very precise rules.

15.Thank you Atratus for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?
Thanks to you for the support, I have nothing else to add. Regards!

Interview with Sathamel done by Patrick posted on 7-2-19

Interview with Sathamel  done  by Patrick

1.Hails please introduce yourself to the readers?
Hello, We are Sathamel a black/death metal band from the UK.

2.When did you first start listening to metal music and who were the first bands that caught your attention?Who are some of your current favorites?
It varies, generally however in terms of metal, the usuals, metallica, iron maiden were the first bands we discovered either through family members or friends during early/pre-teen years. With regards to current favourites, within the band there are so many varied tastes, from the most obscure black metal bands such as Aoratos to the most straight forward heavy metal. Currently in rotation at the moment are the new Hate and Misthyrming albums

3.When did you first meet the other members of the band and was it long before you all started Sathamel? How diid you choose Sathamel as the name of the band does it have a special meaning?
Possibly around 2009 I, KVN and Kruk met. We are the only "original" members. I would say we all crossed paths between 2008 - 2014 at first meeting. It is only since reforming the band late last year we began to work closely with one another.

4.What is the current line-up of the band? And for the readers who have never heard Sathamel's music how would you best describe the bands musical style?
The current lineup is Kruk - Vocals, KVN - Guitars, Cygnus - Guitars, Nadir - Bass and Rekyr - Drums. In terms of musical style we would say we are of "blackened death" ilk, and with our vocalist originally hailing from poland we get a few understandable comparisons to Hate and Behemoth for example - which is totally fine. Those bands influenced us greatly.

5.Horror Vacui is the bands debut release how long did it take the band to write the music for the debut?Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything?
The material of Horror Vacui took around 6 months from nothing to the stage where we were happy to book the studio time and began during the middle of february 2018. During this time it was just Myself and Kruk handling the material, we focused on creating material for demos in the hope of finding new members (writing 5 or 6 songs), or renewing the band as a studio project. little did we know within 4 months we would have a new band almost entirely with Cygnus entering the fold in the April. I remained the creative force but once Cygnus had added his mark into the band, offering most of what you will hear as the title track now the material began to take real shape. During the studio sessions it was Rekyr who brang a lot of extra ideas to the table in terms of extra vocal ideas and some arrangement. Sam at Ritual Sound (Producer) helped greatly with the extra orchestral elements and overall creative atmosphere in the studio.

6.Who usually handles writing the lyrics for the music and what are some subjects you all wrote about on the debut release?Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?
Kruk writes all the lyrics generally, and usually in isolation - most of the lyrics we were not aware of until tracking in the studio. Cygnus did have a vocal arrangement for Horror Vacui - with a different title and lyrical theme but this was amalgamated with Kruk's ideas.
The music comes first, the vocal arrangement then placed on top.

7.I believe the Horror Vacui is self-released would the band like to find a label to work with on future releases or do you prefer to self-release your own music?
A label would be nice, but we have turned some down in the past. We are just waiting on the right home for our music.

8.Besides the Horror Vacui release does the band have any other merchandise currently available for the readers to buy if yes what is available and where can the readers buy it?
We have merchandise available at https://sathamel.bigcartel.com
Our previous releases can be found on https://sathamel.bandcamp.com

9.Has Sathamel played live over the years or do you prefer to work in the studio? What have been some of the bands most memorable shows so far?Who are some bands that you have shared the stage with?
Up until the Hiatus in 2017 the band was fairly active in the UK scene. We have shared the stage with some fantastic bands over the years both hailing from the UK and abroad. Notables would be Old Corpse Road, Hecate Enthroned, Abhorrent Decimation, Daemona, The Infernal Sea, Sidious... We could go on. International bands include Belphegor, Hate, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Tribulation.
A definite highlight was supporting Fleshgod Apocalypse in Leeds, that was a definite "turning point" in one way for the band and one we look back on fondly. The "return" shows this May alongside our good friends Voltumna and Shadowflag are definite highlights.

10.Are their any tours or shows in support of the debut release if yes where will the band be playing?
We have a handful of shows currently announced and a few more in the pipeline unannounced - Our social media are the best places to keep updated. We are looking to focus on the end of 2019 and into 2020.

11.What does Underground Metal mean to you?
It is the spirit of metal - metal thrives on the DIY aspect and of the burning heart of those who support it. It's not a level of passion found in any other genres of music.

12.Beside working in Sathamel do you or any of the members currently work with any other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about these?
Currently KVN is preparing alongside the rest of the band to bring Written In Torment to the stage, which was originally a One man project by a musician who goes by the moniker "leviathan"
Kruk is involved in a band Worldeater and just taking role of vocalist/frontman
Cygnus has been filling in live for a Thrash Metal band named Shrapnel
Nadir is the bass player for a doom band named Petrichor

13.Sathamel comes out of the U.K's blackend death metal scene what is your opinion of the scene in England over the years?
A great scene with thriving talent. Unsure why the UK appears left out compared to scandinavia and europe for example.

14.Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of the U.K blackend death metal scene and are their any new bands you could recommend to the readers?
The above mentioned.

15.Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final words for the readers?
Thank you for the support.
