Interview with Malgoth done on 5-9-21
1.Hails, please introduce yourselves to the readers?
SR: Sup, I’m Steve, one of the vocalists.
DG: Hey I'm Donny, the other vocalist.
ZS: I’m Zach, I do all of the music.
2.When did you first discover blackened death metal and who were the first bands you listened to? Who are some of the current bands that you are listening to these days?
ZS: I was in grade school when I first got into metal in general. Lots of Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Death and other tip of the iceberg bands. Currently listening to anything I can get my hands on.
SR: Probably Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse and Belphegor. Currently listening to Gorerotted again, miss that band.
DG: First bands would be Bolt Thrower, Obituary, Death, Cannibal Corpse, Mayhem, Mortician, Benediction, Entombed. Currently listening to the new Memoriam, Fuck the Facts and the new GUT.
3. Malgoth was formed in 2020. What gave you all the idea to start this band? How did you choose Malgoth as the name of the band and does it have a special meaning?
ZS: We wanted to make something completely barbaric and raw. We’ve been friends for years so it just kinda worked out and came together quickly. I came up with the name out of nowhere, but apparently it’s some kind of demon. We just liked the sound of it.
4.What is the current lineup of the band? Who would you say are the bands biggest influences and for the readers who have never heard Malgoth how would you best describe the bands musical style?
ZS: The current lineup is Steve and Donny both on vocals, and myself handling all of the music, mixing, mastering, etc.
DG: For me there is heavy Anal Cunt influence vocally.
ZS: I never thought about that, but I can see it now. [Laughs] DG: [Laughs] ZS: Donny G – PCP Shrieks
5.’Primordial Dawn’ is the band's debut release which is getting a vinyl release through Iron Bonehead Rec. when did you and the band first come in contact with this label?
ZS: I reached out to Patrick and sent him a link to our Bandcamp. He liked what he heard and offered us a deal. He’s pretty easy going and so are we, so it has been a great collaboration so far.
6.How long did it take the band to write the music for the debut release? Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything?
SR: Wasn’t it like a couple of weeks? I’d say we all took part in writing, Zach with the music, Donny and I with the lyrics.
DG: I did write the lyrics pretty quick.
7.Where does the band draw influence for the lyrics and what are some subjects written about on the debut release? Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?
ZS: We write about war, torture, death, hatred of society and some religious touches. I write and record the music and send it to the other guys and they go to town with their vocals.
8.Besides the upcoming debut release does the band have any other merchandise available at this time? If yes what is available and where can the readers purchase it?
ZS: No, at the moment we have no merch available, but hopefully soon. The 12” Vinyl will be our first physical release. Be sure to pick that up!
9.Has the band started working on new music for the next release or are you concentrating on promoting the debut release? Would you like to do a full length or will it be another EP?
DG: Yes. ZS: We started working on our first full-length album almost immediately after recording the debut. It will also be out on Iron Bonehead sometime later this year.
10.What does Underground Metal mean to you?
DG: Freedom.
SR: It’s a good time. Kick back with a J and some blast beats outta the speakers. Extreme relaxation. ZS: I agree with both of them. It’s about being able to make what you want to make and not having to answer to anybody.
11.Malgoth comes out of Canada's blackened death metal scene. What is your opinion of the scene in Canada over the years?
DG: It’s barely or non-existent.
SR: Yeah, not much really going on to grab my attention.
ZS: We’ve had some great extreme bands come out of Canada over the decades, but the underground scene is weak. The fans don’t really believe in supporting something that’s not already big and established. That needs to change.
12.Who are your all-time favorite Canadian bands and are there any new ones you could recommend to the readers?
DG: Fuck the Facts, Quo Vadis, Neuraxis, Gorguts, Kataklysm, Strapping Young Lad.
SR: Used to fuck with 3 Inches of Blood a lot back in the day, Strapping Young Lad as well.
ZS: Conqueror / Revenge and Blasphemy are pretty great. I love me some Rush too [Laughs]
13.Besides working in Malgoth, do any of the members currently work with any other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?
ZS: Donny and I are in another death metal band called Chasmdweller. We just released a new EP on April 7th called ‘Fossilized’. You can hear that on our Bandcamp or on any of the various streaming platforms. I also have a solo dungeon synth project called Execration Chamber.
SR: I’m doing vocals for another project by Acid Brain, probably dropping mid-summer. A little more grind influenced. Couple of tracks are up on YouTube, Spotify iTunes etc.
DG: I produce for many artists in hip-hop, RNB and metal alike. I have a solo metal project "Anguish" on the way as well as many other solo projects.
14.Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out. Do you have any final comments for the readers?
ZS: Thanks for the continued support, and be sure to pick up our record when it drops on June 18th. Big thanks to you for this interview and to Iron Bonehead for taking a chance on us.
DG: Thanks for the support and stay tuned for many gems.
SR: Get the neck braces ready for all the head banging you’re about to be doing to our album!
