Interview with War Prod. Posted on 12-14-20

1.Hails War Faust please introduce yourself to the readers?

Hello there. First of all, thank you for the interview. I'm just another person who loves the UG. I live in Portugal and listen to Metal since 1992 (I think, lol).

2.When did you first discover black metal and who were some of the first bands you heard? Who are some of the current bands that have caught your attention?

Hmmm... Maybe around 1993 or 1994. Not sure to be honest. The first bands... If my mind does not trick me, Abigor, Immortal, Darkthrone, Forgotten Woods, Burzum, etc. Bands at this moment that caught my attention... Well, the list is big, to be honest. So I will only mention a few but mention only the countries. The new wave of Russian Atmospheric Black Metal, the new wave of raw North American Black Metal bands, some English bands dedicated to Black Metal. Besides Black Metal some Dark Ambient and Dungeon Synth bands. The Death Metal style, I still love it (OSDM) but lately, I'm not listening too much.

3.What were some of your favorite concerts that you have witnessed over the years? Who are some of your favorite bands that you have gotten to see live?

Oh my... I live intensely all concerts that I saw. Of course, there were good and not so good ones. The best ones I saw were Bolt Thrower, King Diamond, Setherial and all the Primordial gigs. And plenty of UG bands that I would love to see and luckily I saw them. Like Darkmoon Warrior, Corpus Christii, Irae, Nortada Gelada, Balmog, Hecate Enthroned, Profanatica, Rites of Thy Degringolade, Nocturnal, Witchburner (Very good this one), Goat Torment, Demonomancy, just to mention a few.

4.War Productions was started back in 2002 what gave you the idea to start this label? Are you satisfied with how things have gone with the label over the years?

Yes, it's true. Well, it was something that I wanted to do, it was a dream. So later I manage to do it. Also cause I had bands and the supports were a bit null. So I started my own.

There were moments that were really tough, In the beginning, for example, many labels didn't want to deal with me, cause the label was young and with not very known bands. I learned a lot of things, how to do things and I'm still learning to be honest. But in general, I'm very happy with all I have done and all that I learned.

5.What do you feel is the easiest and hardest part about running a label? Do you run the label alone or do you have some friends that help you with everything?

Well, the easiest part is to answer the emails or PM on the social media that I have. lol. The hardest part... Well, not having money to release all the bands/albums/demos/etc that I love. I started alone and I'm alone doing it. I had in the past one good friend helping me but he left due to lack of time.

6.What styles of metal do you usually work with and release? What have been some of the labels best selling releases?

When I started I wanted to release all the music styles that I like/love. But very fast I understood that was not possible due to the lack of money and doing all things alone was impossible to reach everywhere. So I started to release only the music style I felt/feel more related to.

Hmm... I try to do things always in the same way to all bands, the publicity, the promo, the shares, etc etc, but I admit that some releases went a bit faster than others. A few examples, Lux Ferre demos, Nox Illunis first CD, Decayed CD, Dekira CD, Grievance LP, etc.

7.What are some of your current releases that the readers should check out? And are their any upcoming releases for the end of 2020 or early 2021?

To this question, I have to say. ALL War Productions releases (ahahahah), the recent ones but also the older ones (some still available). The reason is just one, I love everything I released.

To end this fckg year I will release Grievance "Nos Olhos da Coruja". It will be the last release of this fckg year. For next year, I already have two releases to do but I can't advance much more at this moment.

8.Do you usually trade with other labels or distro's or do you prefer to do wholesale orders? If their any labels or distro's reading this what styles of metal do you carry in your distro and where can they contact you about setting up trades?

I do both. Trades and wholesales, even if the wholesales are way better cause I can see money faster in order to invest again in future releases.

On War Productions mailorder you will find mainly Black Metal, but also Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Dark Ambient, Doom, and Dungeon Synth.

9.What does Black Metal mean to you?

Hmm... This question is always hard/tricky to answer in my opinion, cause every time you try to answer it, people think that you are saying another thing and point the finger at you. So... Is a music style that I feel very related to. The atmosphere around it, the sound, etc. And I will answer only this.

10.War Faust, you live in Portugal what is your opinion of the black, death metal scene in Portugal over the years?

Yes, it's true. We already had very good years here, in those two music styles and in many others too. But lately, in my opinion, is a bit divided and stopped too. Bands still release albums or demos but not so much support between each other like was in the past.

11.Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of Portugal? Are their any new upcoming bands that you feel the readers should check out soon?

There are several bands I like. I will just mention a few, some already gone, unfortunately. Grievance, Corpus Christii, Irae, Decayed, Alastor, R.D.B, Necrose (R.I.P.), Goldenpyre, Black Cilice, Aberration (R.I.P.), Grog, Acceptus Noctifer (R.I.P.), Arcanus Tenebrae, Ars Diavoli, Satanize, Undersave, Coldness, Cripta Oculta, War Blasphemy, Lux Ferre, Dolentia, Bosque, Deity of Carnification (R.I.P.), In tha Umbra (first releases), Inthyflesh, Trevas (R.I.P.), Motörpenis (R.I.P.), Gangrena (R.I.P.), Evisceration and I will stop here. lol.

12.When you need to take a break from working on a label business what do you like to do in your free time?

Well, that is easy. My books, TV series, documentaries about nature/wildlife, and history. In the past, I was into B-Movies but I stopped.

13.I believe you are also involved with some bands please tell us about the musical bands that you work with?

At this moment I'm only playing live bass with Grievance and in the future, I will record the bass on a future Norwegian band album. I have my own projects, some are recent, others starting again cause I lost everything in the past when my old PC delivered his soul to the creator. ahahahahahahahah. The styles are diverse. It goes from Black Metal, passing on Black Death Metal, Funeral Doom, Dark Ambient, or Dungeon Synth. Trying to be busy with my buttons (An expression that we have in my country).

14.Thank you War Faust for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final words for the readers?

It was my pleasure and to be honest, it's me that has to say Thank you for the opportunity.                        Label Contacts                                                                                                                                               https://war-productions.org/warproductions/                                                                                                https://warproductions.bandcamp.com/                                                                                                       https://www.facebook.com/WarProductionsPT/                                                                                           https://twitter.com/WarProd                                                                                                                          https://www.youtube.com/warproductionspt                                                                                               https://www.instagram.com/warproductions/                                                                                               https://soundcloud.com/warproductions

Interview with Trench Warfare posted on 12-14-20

1. Hails, Jay and Tony. Please introduce yourselves to the readers.

Tony: Greetings, Patrick. My name is Tony Goyang Jr. Hails from West Texas!

Jay: Hi. I'm Jay Gorania, vocalist of Trench Warfare.

2. When did you two first discover metal music, and who were some of the first bands you heard?

Tony: I got into metal around 1993 upon hearing Metallica’s “…And Justice For All” album. I was actually on a bus en route to a football game. This guy, Ben Soliz, introduced me to metal. This was an instant game changer for me. Most people get into metal very subtly. I dove in head first. Within months I was listening to Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Napalm Death, Carcass, etc.

Jay: I was six or seven years old when I was exposed to the likes of Motley Crue, Iron Maiden and Ozzy Osbourne by my older brother. I have always liked music well beyond the scope of metal and heavy music, but my passion for it has been unwavering since I was a young boy.

3. Trench Warfare started in 2015. When did you two first get the idea to start this band? Are you satisfied with how everything has gone with the band so far? What is the current line up of the band?

Tony: The idea for Trench Warfare has been around since my first listen of Conqueror and Black Witchery’s legendary split, “Hellstorm of Evil Vengeance,” back in 2001. In between then and now I filled the void with a solo project, Plague Swarm. A mutual friend of ours, Kelly Bogues, introduced me and Jay.

Jay: Like Tony mentioned, Bogus—Kelly’s nickname—introduced the two of us at Tony’s house for a jam session. As soon as Tony and I realized we mutually liked Blasphemy and Beherit, right then and there we decided to create a band that sounded like them. It ended up taking a while for things to come together, but we have been pleased with the progress, both artistically and as far as reaction from the metal community, which we really didn’t expect. Speaking of Bogus, he was actually our first bassist who performed on our demo.

Tony and I are essentially the core members, and we have enlisted other folks including Lee Fisher who was our drummer on Hatred Prayer. Dustin Putz is the second guitarist, preceded by Nick Norris who is now in Imprecation. Jake Holmes was our bassist for quite some time. He’s in Morbosidad and Churchacide. And Belgor and Whore Of Bethlehem’s Samuel Axelrad have been our live drummers. Everyone I've mentioned is a fantastic musician, and we are appreciative of their involvement.

4. Who would you say are Trench Warfare's biggest influences? And how would you describe the band’s music over the releases?

Tony: Conqueror, Napalm Death, more specifically their “Mentally Murdered” EP, Angelcorpse, and classic Florida Death Metal. The sound for us remained the same from our demo and “Hatred Prayer.” The songs that appeared on the split/compilation album, “Of Vultures and  Vermin,” were actually a part of another project of mine that ceased to exist when the bassist, Kelly Bogues, had to drop out of it for personal reasons. The songs that appeared on the comp were more blackened death metal in the vein of Angelcorpse, early Krisiun, Diabolic. The songs were longer and a bit more complex than that of typical Trench Warfare songs.

Jay: Our demo was born from war metal. We were inspired by that duo of Blasphemy and Beherit as well as artists like Deiphago, Diocletian, Nuclearhammer and Conqueror. As Tony mentioned, our passion for death metal started to become prominent on the compilation, and it really came to the forefront on “Hatred Prayer.” We are obviously influenced by black metal as well, and the album also includes two death doom tracks as well as a hardcore punk cover, Poison Idea’s “Young Lord.” So our influences are varied, also including grindcore, because it’s what we find interesting, and we don’t want to be just another clone band. That would be boring and pointless. In a nutshell, I describe us as a black and death metal hybrid with prominent war metal influences and roots.

5. “Hatred Prayer” is the bands debut full length release that was released through Transcending Obscurity Records. When did you and the band come in contact with this great label?

Jay: We were interviewed for the webzine component that Transcending Obscurity Records had a few years ago. We remained in contact and another label actually asked us to write a full-length for them prior to their unintended slow-down in activities. So we had an album in hand and were in open discussions with a few labels. Transcending Obscurity extended the best offer, so we signed a contract with them. We have been pleased with our relationship with the label, and look forward to recording our second full-length album with them as well.

6. Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything? How long would you say it takes to complete one song?

Tony: Up until about the latter part of 2017, the lineup consisted of only Jay and I. With that being said, I wrote all the music, with exception to "Young Lord," which is a Poison Idea song.

The length of time for completing songs varies. I believe I wrote "Evil Shall Triumph" during a lunch break. As far as the other songs, it typically takes me two to three days if the song writing is flowing smoothly.

7. Who usually handles writing the lyrics for the music and what are some topics written about on the album? Which usually comes first the lyrics or the music?

Jay: The music usually comes first. Tony writes the music. And Lee Fisher (Commit Suicide, Psyopus, Fawn Limbs, Overlord Exterminator) was the recording drummer for “Hatred Prayer.” I’m the lyricist, but Tony wrote the lyrics for the three demo songs that we also re-recorded for the album. Lyrics come to me sporadically or when I intentionally sit down to write them, but the majority of the album’s lyrics came together with a notepad one evening. I was definitely inebriated, filled with rage, and I was listening to music in my car. The album title comes from the song of the same name. "Hatred Prayer" is exactly that. It’s a curse. It isn’t metaphor.

Themes of war are embedded throughout the album’s lyrics. “Sate Thy Lust” is about celebration following victory and the related hedonism, but with the acknowledgement of the importance and need of moderation. "Axioms" is about the snakelike nature of people and the power of language. There is definitely a fine line between persuasion and manipulation. And  "Behead Muhammed" is our formal attack upon Islam, a message that links to the album cover as well.

8. Does Trench Warfare play live very often, or do you prefer working in the studio? What have been some of the bands most memorable shows over the years?

Tony: Every one of the shows has been great due to the lineup. We have had the honor of sharing the stage and/or fests with many bands of current times and from the past. It’s hard for me to pinpoint just one show.

Jay: We don’t play too often, but I’m hoping we can play more often than we have been once the cloud that is the pandemic passes. Like Tony said, we have played with some killer bands. Off the top of my head, playing with Deiphago, Morbosidad, Obeisance, Imprecation and Bestial Whore have been special occasions that have really meant something to me.

9. Besides the Hatred Prayer release are the band’s previous releases still available for the readers to purchase? Besides the physical releases does the band have any other merchandise currently available? If yes, what is available and where can the readers buy it?

Jay: Our demo is available via Nuclear War Now Productions! (https://shop.nwnprod.com/products/22286?_pos=1&_sid=ce0d4df67&_ss=r), and it’s available digitally (https://trenchwarfaretx.bandcamp.com/album/perversion-warfare). People can contact us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/trenchwarfaretexas) regarding our “Demonic Christ” shirt, and “Hatred Prayer” is available via our Bandcamp (https://trenchwarfaremetal.bandcamp.com/album/hatred-prayer-black-death-metal), our label (https://tometal.com/store/) and various brick and mortar record stores in North America and Europe.

10. When you need to take a break from working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?

Tony: My time is usually occupied with work. My other leisurely activities are working out and video games.

Jay: I work quite a bit, just like Tony. I’ve also done music journalism for many years. I’m a gym rat. I spend time with my family, and when the world returns to “normal,” I’ll start going to shows again, the good ones, anyway.

11. Trench Warfare comes out of the Texan black/death metal scene. What is your opinion of the scene in Texas over the years?

Tony: There have been various notable acts to come out of Texas: DRI, Thornspawn, Satanik Goat Ritual, Obeisance, Morbosidad, Imprecation, Absu, etc.

Jay: Black/death metal is fantastic in Texas! In addition to the bands Tony mentioned, there are other greats, past and present, including Maiestas, Necrovore, Ceremony, Sacrocurse, Averse Sefira, Nyogthaeblisz, Nexul, Hellvetron and Pyre. On the mainstream end of the spectrum, I’ve always been a Pantera fanatic.

12. Who would you say are your all-time favorite bands coming out of Texas, and are there any new bands you feel the readers should check out soon?

Tony: Yes, the bands I mentioned. Also Pious Levus, Churchacide, Trenchant.

Jay: There’s also Serpentian.

13. Thank you, Tony and Jay, for making the time for this interview. Do you have any final words for the readers?

Tony: Thanks for this interview, and thanks to all those who have supported Trench Warfare.

Jay: Thanks to everyone who has supported our band. To those who haven’t, go to hell. haha                   Band Contacts                                                                                                                                               https://trenchwarfaretx.bandcamp.com/                                                                                                       https://www.facebook.com/trenchwarfaretexas?fref=ts                                                                               https://www.instagram.com/trenchwarfaretexas/                                                                                         Label Contacts                                                                                                                                              https://tometal.com/                                                                                                                                     https://transcendingobscurity.bandcamp.com/                                                                                               https://www.facebook.com/transcendingobscurityrecords                                                                           https://twitter.com/transcendingobs

Intolerant are a duo coming out of the Italian blackend war metal scene and Primal Future is the bands debut full length. The debut release contains ten tracks of savage and barbaric black metal at it's finest. The music is played with extreme aggressive passages that are done with skill and intensity. The drums are done with outbursts of pummeling drum passages. The drums do so to a more controlled beat before going back to the  blasting drums that the band seem to enjoy more.Intolerant have unleashed a great debut of chaotic  war blackend death metal intensity that is both well written and intense in the delievery of the music.                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Band Contacts                                                                                                                                          https://www.facebook.com/intolerantband/                                                                                               https://intolerant.bandcamp.com/releases                                                                                                          Label Contacts                                                                                                                                          https://www.timetokill-records.com/                                                                                                       https://timetokillrecords.bandcamp.com/music                                                                                             https://www.facebook.com/timetokillrecords/

Interview with Tolaeth done on 12-2-20

1.Hails when did you first discover black metal music and who were the first bands that caught your attention? Who are some of the current bands that you have been listening to?

I discovered Black Metal sometime in 1992 not long after getting into Death Metal. Beyond the awareness of bands like Celtic Frost, Venom and Bathory at the time, the so-called “second wave” was upon us and I believe it started with Beherit and Samael for me. Then there was a lot of news coming out of the Norwegian scene, and the controversy became sensationalized while the underground took notice leading to the infamous history we know of today.

2. when did you first get the idea to start Tolaeth and are you satisfied with how things have gone with the band so far?

The concept goes back to the mid/late-90’s. It never materialized until recently for one reason or another, mainly due to other projects. A lot of the riffs on the debut EP date back that far as well, so it’s a rather satisfactory release.

3.Who would you say are Tolaeth's biggest influences? For the readers who have never heard the band how would you best describe the musicial style?

It comes from a wide range of Black Metal, specifically the usual Scandinavian suspects. Lately, Black Metal coming out of the Finnish, Icelandic and Québécois scenes has been impressive. Tolaeth is raw and melodic Black Metal. At present, it’s nothing new and it’s not supposed to be.

4.The Self-Titled EP. is being released on cassette through Humanity's Plague Prod. when did you first come in contact with this label?

We have known each other for a long time. RAF at Humanity’s Plague was one of the only people to hear the original recording of the EP a few years back and was interested, so when it came time to record everything properly, he agreed to release it.

5.How long did it take to write the music for the EP.?How long does it usually take to complete one song?

As mentioned before, some ideas on the EP go back more than 20 years. It was a long, piecemealed process to get everything done over the course of nearly 4 years. Fortunately, the next release won’t take as long. Song completion isn’t really a science; some songs write themselves, others require exhaustive deliberation.

6.Where do you draw inspirtation for the lyrics and what are some topics written about on the EP.?Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?

Thematically, the lyrics revolve around the universally shared sensation when a sinister essence chooses us — its cold touch as it slithers down the spine. Restlessness and negativity is the product, and as such the lyrics reflect it. There’s usually some mythology or dark gnostic principles injected for good measure. Lyrics are often conceptualized during the songwriting process, however music is always completed first.

7.Have you started work on the next release and do you know if it will be another EP.or would you like to release a full-length?

A lot of work has been done for the next release so far with a few nearly completed songs. There’s enough material for a full-length, although the aim is to release material faster, so I would expect another EP before a full-length. We’ll see…

8.I believe Tolaeth is a one man band when you started this band did you plan to work alone or would you like to find new musicians to work with?

Very observant! Tolaeth is a solo endeavor for now, yes, and it’s sufficient being so. At some point, there may be reason to work with additional musicians. Only time will tell.

9.What do you feel is the easiest and hardest part about being the sole member of the band?

It took half a lifetime to get these songs into a place where it felt suitable for public scrutiny. So the the hardest part is taking the required time to compose when you’re mindful of all of the moving parts in the music, lyrics, artwork, etc. The easiest part is that I don’t have to put up with anyone’s shit, just my own!

10.Tolaeth comes out of the U.K Black netal scene what are your thoughts on the scene in the U.K over the years?

I’m not involved with the UK scene whatsoever, although there are some noteworthy bands.

11.Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of the U.K and are their any new bands you could recomend to the readers?

Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are the obvious ones. The old Death/Doom “Peaceville Three”, as it were: My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Anathema. The Deathtrip is a more recent favorite Black Metal band. Wodensthrone was good when they were around. And I like Esoteric a lot as well.

12.What does Black Metal mean to you?

An escapist construct in discordance, from sound and society. And the defiance to toe the line for any we oppose.

13.Besides working in Tolaeth do you currently work with any other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?

I am and have been involved with multiple projects, but for the sake of this interview, we’ll keep all eyes on Tolaeth.

14.Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?

This is the first ever Tolaeth interview. Thanks for the support and if anyone has gotten this far, I’d urge them to check out the debut EP via any search function on the internet or through Humanity’s Plague Production.                                                                                                                                                     Band Contacts                                                                                                                                               https://www.facebook.com/Tolaeth-101058085138813                                                                               https://tolaeth.bandcamp.com/releases                                                                                                         Label Contacts                                                                                                                                              https://www.discogs.com/user/HumanitysPlagueProd                                                                                https://www.facebook.com/HumanitysPlagueProdBlackMetal
