Interview with War Prod. Posted on 12-14-20

1.Hails War Faust please introduce yourself to the readers?

Hello there. First of all, thank you for the interview. I'm just another person who loves the UG. I live in Portugal and listen to Metal since 1992 (I think, lol).

2.When did you first discover black metal and who were some of the first bands you heard? Who are some of the current bands that have caught your attention?

Hmmm... Maybe around 1993 or 1994. Not sure to be honest. The first bands... If my mind does not trick me, Abigor, Immortal, Darkthrone, Forgotten Woods, Burzum, etc. Bands at this moment that caught my attention... Well, the list is big, to be honest. So I will only mention a few but mention only the countries. The new wave of Russian Atmospheric Black Metal, the new wave of raw North American Black Metal bands, some English bands dedicated to Black Metal. Besides Black Metal some Dark Ambient and Dungeon Synth bands. The Death Metal style, I still love it (OSDM) but lately, I'm not listening too much.

3.What were some of your favorite concerts that you have witnessed over the years? Who are some of your favorite bands that you have gotten to see live?

Oh my... I live intensely all concerts that I saw. Of course, there were good and not so good ones. The best ones I saw were Bolt Thrower, King Diamond, Setherial and all the Primordial gigs. And plenty of UG bands that I would love to see and luckily I saw them. Like Darkmoon Warrior, Corpus Christii, Irae, Nortada Gelada, Balmog, Hecate Enthroned, Profanatica, Rites of Thy Degringolade, Nocturnal, Witchburner (Very good this one), Goat Torment, Demonomancy, just to mention a few.

4.War Productions was started back in 2002 what gave you the idea to start this label? Are you satisfied with how things have gone with the label over the years?

Yes, it's true. Well, it was something that I wanted to do, it was a dream. So later I manage to do it. Also cause I had bands and the supports were a bit null. So I started my own.

There were moments that were really tough, In the beginning, for example, many labels didn't want to deal with me, cause the label was young and with not very known bands. I learned a lot of things, how to do things and I'm still learning to be honest. But in general, I'm very happy with all I have done and all that I learned.

5.What do you feel is the easiest and hardest part about running a label? Do you run the label alone or do you have some friends that help you with everything?

Well, the easiest part is to answer the emails or PM on the social media that I have. lol. The hardest part... Well, not having money to release all the bands/albums/demos/etc that I love. I started alone and I'm alone doing it. I had in the past one good friend helping me but he left due to lack of time.

6.What styles of metal do you usually work with and release? What have been some of the labels best selling releases?

When I started I wanted to release all the music styles that I like/love. But very fast I understood that was not possible due to the lack of money and doing all things alone was impossible to reach everywhere. So I started to release only the music style I felt/feel more related to.

Hmm... I try to do things always in the same way to all bands, the publicity, the promo, the shares, etc etc, but I admit that some releases went a bit faster than others. A few examples, Lux Ferre demos, Nox Illunis first CD, Decayed CD, Dekira CD, Grievance LP, etc.

7.What are some of your current releases that the readers should check out? And are their any upcoming releases for the end of 2020 or early 2021?

To this question, I have to say. ALL War Productions releases (ahahahah), the recent ones but also the older ones (some still available). The reason is just one, I love everything I released.

To end this fckg year I will release Grievance "Nos Olhos da Coruja". It will be the last release of this fckg year. For next year, I already have two releases to do but I can't advance much more at this moment.

8.Do you usually trade with other labels or distro's or do you prefer to do wholesale orders? If their any labels or distro's reading this what styles of metal do you carry in your distro and where can they contact you about setting up trades?

I do both. Trades and wholesales, even if the wholesales are way better cause I can see money faster in order to invest again in future releases.

On War Productions mailorder you will find mainly Black Metal, but also Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Dark Ambient, Doom, and Dungeon Synth.

9.What does Black Metal mean to you?

Hmm... This question is always hard/tricky to answer in my opinion, cause every time you try to answer it, people think that you are saying another thing and point the finger at you. So... Is a music style that I feel very related to. The atmosphere around it, the sound, etc. And I will answer only this.

10.War Faust, you live in Portugal what is your opinion of the black, death metal scene in Portugal over the years?

Yes, it's true. We already had very good years here, in those two music styles and in many others too. But lately, in my opinion, is a bit divided and stopped too. Bands still release albums or demos but not so much support between each other like was in the past.

11.Who are your all-time favorite bands coming out of Portugal? Are their any new upcoming bands that you feel the readers should check out soon?

There are several bands I like. I will just mention a few, some already gone, unfortunately. Grievance, Corpus Christii, Irae, Decayed, Alastor, R.D.B, Necrose (R.I.P.), Goldenpyre, Black Cilice, Aberration (R.I.P.), Grog, Acceptus Noctifer (R.I.P.), Arcanus Tenebrae, Ars Diavoli, Satanize, Undersave, Coldness, Cripta Oculta, War Blasphemy, Lux Ferre, Dolentia, Bosque, Deity of Carnification (R.I.P.), In tha Umbra (first releases), Inthyflesh, Trevas (R.I.P.), Motörpenis (R.I.P.), Gangrena (R.I.P.), Evisceration and I will stop here. lol.

12.When you need to take a break from working on a label business what do you like to do in your free time?

Well, that is easy. My books, TV series, documentaries about nature/wildlife, and history. In the past, I was into B-Movies but I stopped.

13.I believe you are also involved with some bands please tell us about the musical bands that you work with?

At this moment I'm only playing live bass with Grievance and in the future, I will record the bass on a future Norwegian band album. I have my own projects, some are recent, others starting again cause I lost everything in the past when my old PC delivered his soul to the creator. ahahahahahahahah. The styles are diverse. It goes from Black Metal, passing on Black Death Metal, Funeral Doom, Dark Ambient, or Dungeon Synth. Trying to be busy with my buttons (An expression that we have in my country).

14.Thank you War Faust for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final words for the readers?

It was my pleasure and to be honest, it's me that has to say Thank you for the opportunity.                        Label Contacts                                                                                                                                               https://war-productions.org/warproductions/                                                                                                https://warproductions.bandcamp.com/                                                                                                       https://www.facebook.com/WarProductionsPT/                                                                                           https://twitter.com/WarProd                                                                                                                          https://www.youtube.com/warproductionspt                                                                                               https://www.instagram.com/warproductions/                                                                                               https://soundcloud.com/warproductions
