Interview with Conquerors (with Morty) done on 4-22-21

1.Hails please introduce yourself to the readers?

We are Conquerors, we come Reims in France and we play Brutal Black Thrash Metal.

2.When did you first discover thrash metal and who were the first bands you heard?Who are some of the current bands that have caught your attention?

I discovered Thrash Metal with Slayer through videos games when I was a kid, and it never left me.

3.Conquerors was started back in 2013 what gave you all the idea to start this band? What is the current line up of the band?

I was playing guitar for years alone in my room, I knew how to sing, my head was full of ideas so I told myself “why not ?”, so we started just like all the bands in the world.

Yet, Conquerors is Morty (guitar and vocals), Anfauglith (drums) and Ottar (bass).

4.Who would you say are the bands biggest influences over the years and have they remained the same or changed with time? For the readers who have never heard Conquerors how would you best describe the bands musicial style?

My influences are mostly early Slayer, early Bathory, Aura Noir, … I don’t think it will change since it’s very difficult for me to be interested in “new bands”.

We play thrash metal, highly influenced by black metal. We add brutality through drums and sometimes through the vocals. I often switch between screaming and growling. So we call it Brutal Black Thrash.

5.Stormbringer is the bands third full-length that is being released through Music Records when did the band first come in contact with this label?

I sent them a mail during September 19’, I don’t really remember. Then we remained silent during a year because we wanted to record again “Dawn of War” and we were working on “Stormbringer”. The idea was to offer solid material to make a deal a record label. And it was a success.

6.Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything? How long does it taake to complete one song?

I write everything alone. When I feel a song is finished, we play it together. One rehearsal is usually enough. It’s quite simple.

The writing process is short to. Some songs have been written in less than an hour.

7.Who usually handles writing the lyrics for the music and what are some subjects written about on the new release?Which usually comes first the music or the lyrics?

I write the lyrics the day before the recording. It deals with war, death, battlefields, … Nothing special at all as you can see. I think the most important thing is the rhythm you give to the vocals, and the singing style (scream or growl). That’s what rehearsals are made for. You have to work on the “flow”, the content is secondary for our music style.

8.Besides the Stormbringer release are the bands previous releases still availible for the readers to purchase?Besides physical releases does the band have any other merchandise currently availible if yes what is availible and where can the readers purchase it?

“Stormbringer” and “Dawn of War” will be available on physical format on may 21th. Our previous stuff is available on bandcamp. But it’s not worth it haha. I don’t remember but I think it’s free.

9.I know with the pandemic bands are unable to play live but has the band had the opportunity to play very many live shows over the years or do you prefer working in the studio? What have been some of the bands most memorable shows so far?

Playing live is the achievement for every band I think. We’re in hard times, but we all suffer the same way. We played something like 30 show since we started. The most recent shows were the best because our style is better than before, the alchemy between us is way better too.

10.What does Underground Metal mean to you?

It can be all sort of things for me. “Underground” can be a shield to hide laziness or a lack of knowledge, it’s often used for bad recordings. Underground is a word used to describe a band that isn’t well known in the community too. But I think underground is way to see things : not giving a fuck, doing the best you can do and trying to succeed while being yourself.

11.Besides working in Conquerors do any of the members currently work with any other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?

No solo projects. No time for that.

12.Conquerors comes out of France's black, thrash metal scene what is your opinion of the scene in France over the years?

I don’t care.
